Volunteers of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton (WRS) are considered to be a vital part of the team and will be treated as valued members. Volunteers are expected to follow the policies, procedures, and regulations adhered to by the society.Animal Care Provider/Intake Coordinator:
Volunteers are able to help staff with food preparation, enclosure maintenance, and with animal exams. Further training is available for volunteers interested in helping when wildlife is first brought to the shelter.
Community Awareness & Education:
WRS participates in several animal related community events every year such as Pets in the Park and Pet Expo. These events are broken into 2-4 hour shifts and volunteers attend the event and inform the public about the society and wildlife. This is a great way to meet other volunteers!
Junior Wildlife Ambassador Education Committees:
The Junior Wildlife Ambassador Program is a volunteer created and driven outreach education program whereby volunteers of WRS go into Edmonton and area elementary schools to educate students on the importance of wildlife in our community.
1. Development Committee - researches and develops Power Point presentations, pictures/photography, activities and games, display materials, printed materials and assembling all the needed materials into an education binder.
2. Presentation Committee – presents to children in Edmonton and area schools and ensures teachers and students complete workshop evaluation forms. Presenters must have a vehicle.
Core Team & Special Event Planning:
Core Team members are interested in understanding and working for WRS' overall needs. They work as a team to plan events in the community such as: comedy night and the compost sale. A Run/Walk Wild for Wildlife is held each October and committee members are needed to help for the planning of this event. Members help raise awareness with events that also raise necessary funds for the shelter. This is a great way to meet others and make a real difference for the wildlife.
Wildlife Hotline:
This can be done from the comfort of your home or at the shelter. As well as attending a volunteer orientation, a hotline orientation must be attended before scheduling for hotline shifts and a manual is given to you. It's a fun way to learn a lot about wildlife by returning the public's calls regarding wildlife. You direct people to vet clinics or to the shelter with injured wildlife.
Wildlife Pick Up or Rescue Drivers:
Be an ambulance for wildlife! Be on call during the day to pick-up wildlife in need of medical attention that are at veterinary clinics in Edmonton and surrounding areas. Wildlife is usually in a box and ready for pick-up but training is provided re: safe handling and transport.
